Trophy Wife

Trophy Wife imageTrophy Wife is one of those shows that has an extremely strong out the gate premise and amazing casting. Malin Akerman’s long awaited return to TV (Hello, The Comeback, anyone?) is here with her portrayal of the titular Trophy Wife. Kate is a pretty, young party girl when she meets Pete, in a not so cute meet-cute which resulting in a bloody nose and emergency-room trip. A meaningful glance, and presto, they’re married, with her inheriting his multiple kids (difficult to keep track of how many at times) and him dealing with two ex-wives, played by an amazing Marcia Gay Harden as the has-it-all-together doctor first wife and “Saturday Night Live’s” Michaela Watkins as the hippy-dippie crystal loving second ex. Subjected to the inevitable snark about being a “MILF” and “child bride,” Kate works really hard to win over those the ENTIRE family. Efforts include her somewhat misguided attempts to be the cool parent to trying to be the disciplinarian to finally earning a modicum of respect from the exes. The high divorce rate has certainly produced plenty of families that will be able to identify with the show, which is it’s main draw. Only time will tell, however, how sustainable this is. Oddly, the moments of the show that really sing are Kate’s interactions with the exes, recalling a twisted-sitcom-y version of Big Love. Tune in to ABC Tuesdays to see if Kate is destined to be just another ex or if she’ll make it as the ultimate Trophy Wife. Check local listings for times.
