gotham-penguine-robin-lord-taylorWe are deep deep into the first season of Gotham, and it’s fair to say that the series is going strong. The writers are smart enough to give ample time and attention to the things that work the best in the show, and by that we mainly mean…Penguin. Robin Lord Taylor’s gleeful and effeminate take on the manipulative crimelord-in-the-making is spot on, mainly in how he makes the DC villain his own. But he’s not the only one pushing in on this free-for-all of origin stories (which is the best thing about Gotham). The Riddler, Catwoman and other more esoteric villains are all present, and we’re wondering when a few others are going to make an appearance.

A roundup:

Agile, lithe and very thin, the young Selina had a prime view of the Wayne murders in the show’s pilot, and has mainly been skulking about in the shadows ever since. She has shared some words, and smiles, with David Mazouz’s grieving young Bruce Wayne. Played by Camren Bicondova, we’re very curious to see where Catwoman leads things next.

The only villain the show makers have yet to really work with is Edward Nygma, who (intriguingly) is Gordon and Bullock’s go-to for all things forensic science. The genius has an obvious preoccupation with questions and riddles and the like, but so far the writer have come up with nothing new. At least actor Cory Michael Smith is cute.

clare-foley-ivy-pepperPoison Ivy

We’ve only gotten a dash of Ivy Pepper since Gotham kicked off, as played by the adorable redhead (and perhaps youngest of the bunch) Clare Foley. Daughter to the man who is framed (and then killed) for the murder of the Waynes, we have definitely not seen the last of her, and this is another smart way the show has us hooked: we can’t wait for another hint to drop.

In a phenomenal entrance, minor DC villain Vistor Zsasz (Anthony Carrigan) grabbed some major spotlight in the recent (very good) episode “Penguin’s Umbrella”. A vile thug and killer, Victor is seen cutting into his own skin, keeping count of his victims.

And then there’s Fish Mooney. As portrayed by the kooky Jada Pinkett-Smith, she has had her moments, but she does feel a little out of place amongst all these villains who have traction in the original world of the comics. She seems primed for a major downfall before this season is done though. We kinda can’t wait.

As for more, we also can’t wait to watch this week’s episode, entitled “Harvey Dent” (aka Two-Face for fans who are paying attention—this Harvey is of course not to be confused with Harvey Bullock, James Gordon’s bullish partner). With about half a season left, it’s only a matter of time before the clues start dropping about a certain smiley-faced baddie known as The Joker… At least, we hope so!
